help with inlay
help with inlay
I am wanting to do the Ichthus symbol (religious symbol looks like a fish) on a guitar fret board. Does anyone know where I can get a file template for this?

Re: help with inlay
Hi Brooks,
That's a pretty simple shape - have you tried making it yourself?
Find an image of it you like via google, import it into the software and draw the vectors using the image as a guide.
Any number of us can do it for you of course, but you might enjoy the process of doing it on your own.

Re: help with inlay
Thanks, I have tried to draw this design myself but was unable to dictate the thickness of the lines. I was hoping to cut out the pocket and then cut the material (curly maple) to insert. I was hoping to make the insert .08" not sure how to do this.

And if I find an image on google what file type must I down load?

Re: help with inlay
Hi Mike,
Any common image format will be fine. It's just for use as a guide.
I'm confused what you mean by not being able to dictate line thickness. Are you making a sort of "wide outline" for the inlay? If so, just draw your vector outline and offset/copy that by the amount ("thickness") you want.
If it's just the shape you'll be pocketing, then line thickness doesn't apply.
I guess I'm not clear on what you are trying to accomplish. Maybe you can make a pencil sketch, take a photo and upload it here.

Re: help with inlay
When I attempted to draw the image, it seemed that the lines were very thin. I don't have the experience to cut the male inlay for an image that is a thin single line. Sorry for not being able to verbalize my thoughts.

Re: help with inlay
Watch the V inlay tutorial and it will become clearer I think. It's just a V carve toolpath then flip your vectors and re-cut and a V carve but the male portion in a box. Glue.

You should be able to scale this to whatever size you need

There's a 3D Ichthys (Ikhthus) symbol on the Designandmake.com web site for $10. You can do it yourself easy enough but thought I would mention it anyway.

Re: help with inlay
I made that model. Thought about mentioning it, but I think he just needs vectors - plus it's an easy shape. I just don't know what the goal is. A photo of a pencil sketch would be extremely helpful. I'm sure once we're clear on the goal, a bunch of us can draw it up lickety-split!MarkJohnston wrote:There's a 3D Ichthys (Ikhthus) symbol on the Designandmake.com web site for $10. Re: help with inlay
Hi Michael,
I thought you might have made it.
I used that model back in 2011 I think, to make a plaque for my Grandsons room.
It was 11 by 30" and he loved it plus his favorite Bible verse.
Have a good Christmas my friend.
