Some help again please.

Post by Jan.vanderlinden »

So I'm trying to carve this Harley sign.
In the 2D view, the birds toes are grabbing the Harley sign.
But in the 3D view the toes are cut off.
Any help is appreciated.

It might just be the overlaps of the various vectors giving that effect. Basically you need to decide how you want it too look and then cut, join, duplicate etc the vectors around that area until you get the definition you want. VCarve toolpaths do not like touching or crossing vectors.

Turn on the 2D toolpath preview in the 2D window and look at where the tool is "flowing" you'll soon get the idea of what you need to change.

Adrian,
You're right, I can see the tool path going right through the toes.
But it wont let me cut and or join the vectors that I want.

try the Node edit mode and insert points where you need to cut and join.

I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing wrong. (or maybe what I'm doing)
Nothing that I do will make the vectors join.

Jan, Weird coincidence on this as I had the same issue with this logo, am also in Columbus, and my first
machine was the Shapoko 2, LOL. Its been awhile since I cut this out. From what I recall I edited the
outside main vector to be 1 solid vector, think of this as a border . The inside vectors also need to be just 1 vector. I edited the feet to get down to a single vector. I also "notched" the Harley border so the feet flow into
it. Its confusing but on the feet each talon should be just 1 shape. Anyway I am trying to upload the file
and pictures, please let me know if the link doesn't work. I cut mine out of cheap HD plastic soffet board
as a test, sprayed black, sanded, and think it looks cool. Also, pretty sure I can't share the file with
Logo, so that's why its not carved, you should be able to recreate.

Scott

I haven't posted much at all, but a shout out to those that have, have learned alot from you all!!

Each area to be cut has to be defined by a separate closed vector. If the vectors come together to make a "T" one of them stops there, you have to duplicate and trim so there is a closed vector. And you probably won't be satisfied with the result.

For example, in this picture the blue area must be surrounded by a closed vector, and, if you wish to cut it, the red area must be surrounded by a separate closed vector. One way to understand this is to color a picture of your vectors using a single color crayon, staying within the lines. Each separate area must be defined by a separate closed vector. And you will see where you are asking for an impossible cut. A picture with a "T" requires 3 colors to define the different areas. Routing has only 2 "colors": cut wood, and uncut wood.

Scott,
Nope, it doesn't work.
It doesn't mean that your doing something wrong.
After doing this for only one year, I still have much to learn.
No worries though, I got some help some someone else and all is good.
Thanks for your efforts.
