Stand offs for metal and wood

Post by GJHall »

I know this might not be the right forum, but I will ask anyways.

I have a plasma cutter and I cut the tree of life out of aluminum. We would like to put them onto a wood backer and have the aluminum stay away from the wood.

I am trying to find some kind of way to put a flat or round head thru the aluminum, thru a spacer and into the wood. If we can do this, then the plan was to increase the size of the wood backer and carve the names and or dates for our customers.

I am trying to find a picture of what I mean and will post one as soon as I find something.

TIA for any ideas.

Gary

Home Depot, Lowes and Tractor Supply all carry threaded rod couplers.

I took a metal Tree of Life and offset it by carving an offset vector of the tree.

The aluminum is .064" and the tree is 18 1/2" diameter. The wood backer would be about 20" diameter.

Thanks for your reply.

Now that is a great idea.

We were thinking stand offs because that was what we had seen before.

I will have to check this out some more.

See how you have those little looks like nails in the second picture holding the sign on the bottom? That is the idea we were thinking of but we wanted to have as small as posible so the heads are not as noticable than using screws.

Thanks

Gary

so it is very thin Aluminium then, one option I was thinking about was to cut a thread in it & use threaded bar

Are you wanting the face of the aluminium to remain free of holes/screws/fasteners or are you happy for there to be some sort of fastener showing ? The stand offs you have shown in your picture would obviously have the head of the fastener visible, can't help with suppliers being in the UK but any sign supplier should carry that type of fastening & ebay is full of people selling then at all different sizes.
If you want the aluminium face to remain clear of any fasteners or marks then something like Bighead Fasteners would work, various different types but basically you would bond one part of the fastener to the back of the aluminium. Again can't help with suppliers but if Bighead themselves don't sell on your side of the pond there will be some sort of equivalent

Sorry forgot the link

Speaking of the finishing nails, here's a way I came up with to set the nail without damaging the surface.
Use a piece of sanding mat
Use a piece of sanding mat
set the nail in place
set the nail in place
put the mat over the nail and tap it in.
put the mat over the nail and tap it in.
no damage to the surface.

Any method that works is good   , you could also have used a hammer/mallet with a soft(er) insert such as nylon, hide, copper etc etc

Go to the link below and request a catalog or use the online catalog. They have everything! you will need to complete this project and just about any other project. They have sent me free catalogs in the past.
BTW, look under sign components to find stand offs.

Hope this helps.
