2 sided drill hole
Hi
If i drill a hole completely through the material from the top, how come when i flip and do preview the holes are not showing?

thanks malc

Did you set the depth of the drill hole to go beyond the thickness of the material? If you set it to the same depth as the material is thick, it won't show through the other side.

Re: 2 sided drill hole
Howdy
I assume you are using an actual drill bit which is tapered on the end. If the depth is not set appropriately beyond the material thickness, it won't show through.
End Mill - now that's different. If depth is set to equal the material thickness, then you can see through the material when previewing (I would still recommend setting the depth a little beyond the material thickness to assure a clean real life cut-through)

Re: 2 sided drill hole
The material is 15mm and the drill path is set to 25mm as the intention is toput dowels in the holes for alignment later on.
As i was typing this i had rebooted and update and suddenly there are the holes both sides, so my apologies to all as it seems to have been a graphics glitch
and thank you for the replies

Re: 2 sided drill hole
Thanks for the update always good to hear a problem has been solved, just one other thing to remember, sometimes if the preview resolution is set low it can cause this to happen, increasing the toolpath preview resolution can often help.

Re: 2 sided drill hole
So following on from this escapade as its in the same vein.
I found the brilliant marlin 2 sided video and realised i was missing out a few bits so i have redone my drawing whilst following the video.
But this time i cannot see through where the second cut has taken place on side 2. I have tried the overcut on the limit planes in case it was that but no joy.
The imported object is 15mm and the material 15mm, the zero plane is 7.5mm so exactly in the middle and everything looks really spot on, i do the 3d roughing side 1 then the finish side 2,i turn over and do the roughing again but it does not cut through.
Any ideas that i should be looking at please?

Re: 2 sided drill hole
Hi
It's tough to make a good guess without seeing your file and how it is setup
Do you have rough and finish toolpaths for both sides?
What is the value of the deepest cut for each side of the material (probably will be your Finish toolpath if not doing profile cutouts)

Re: 2 sided drill hole
Thanks for reply
I start with a rough for the top and then do a finish for the top. I preview and all looks well and if I hover over the cut it shows 7.495 and fluctuates as I move it about, if I remember (as I am at work now) it did got to 7.5 at one point.
I then flip it and the same again, and again it showed as above.
On a previous drawing I used a profile cut but the training video shows that I should not need and extra path/job as it cut through even after the roughing (probably because of the overcut, hence why I tried that too)
cheers

Re: 2 sided drill hole
Well, it sure sounds as if you have it setup correctly. I can't think of an explanation why you're not seeing a cut through if both sides are cutting down past the midpoint of your material block.

Michael
Can you have alook at this file please
it is a part of my drawing and i have done the same as i have with the original, see if you can spot it.
It does go over 7.5 on the cut too

Re: 2 sided drill hole
right all change, i just had to know why..............
I went mad on the overcut to 7.5mm and i could see right through after a recalc and preview all sides.
I then reduced this by half ea time doing the same.
Eventually i got to '0' on the overcut the same as at the start and redid it all again and lo and behold you can see right through.
I have absolutely no idea why but if anyone gets a similar issue then try the above, strange
Malc

Re: 2 sided drill hole
That's interesting. I wonder why you had trouble with the preview in the first place.
Anyway, appears to be working alright now (and happy to hear it!)
