Measuring tool problem

Post by Hitch »

I've drawn two circles, one 36" D and the other 32.5. The difference is 3.5" but the measuring tool states 1.75" I'm cutting out an arc and the piece looks less than 3.5" wide when view with the size of the wood selected which is 6". What am I missing?

1.75 is 1/2 of 3.5. Are you sure you aren't measuring just the gap on one side between the 2 circles drawn using the same centerpoint? If so, add the gap on the opposite side to get 3.5".

I'm using a segmented turning stock size calculator to determine the board (one of 8) to make a 36" diameter crown and anchor wheel. I want the finished thickness to be 3.5", hence the 36" outside diameter and a 32.5" inside. The gap should be 3.5, not 1.75" which the measuring tool gives me. Also, I take the segment (1 of 8) and center it on a board which is 6" wide by 16" and it doesn't look big enough.

If you want a gap of 3.5" between two concentric circles, the radius of the smaller circle must be 3.5 " smaller than the radius of the larger circle. This means the diameter must be 7" smaller. So, if the larger circle is 36" diameter, the smaller circle must be 29" diameter

After further thought and a good night's sleep, I discovered that I had a senior's moment .A little problem with the math, good thing it wasn't anything to do with artillery.
Anyway all is well .Thanks for the replies.

Next time just use the offset tool and offset the other circle to the inside, 3.5 inches.
