Pocketing out large areas
Newby to CNC: If I'm going to pocket out a 13" X 10" space, what would be the proper tool? I'm currently using a .25 end mill, but it takes quite awhile. Any suggestions on a larger tool? Thanks.

Re: Pocketing out large areas
When I need to pocket out a large area I use the largest end mill I have. That is usually a 1/2" diameter bit but at home I have a 3/4" diameter bit that shortens the cut time even more. Just be sure and be conservative with your pass depth and stepover values, and ramp down into each pass.

Thanks! I didn't know they made end mills that large.

Amana makes one that may work for you. #45236. 1" cut with a 1/4" shank.

I'd recommend as big a shank as your router will except when working with larger bits. There's a fare amount of mass moving very fast.

I totally agree. I don't know if I can get a 1/2" or larger collet for my Shark HD4, but if I can't, I'll definitely slow the plunge and feed way down. Thanks!

I'd suggest using the ramp plunge option also.Steven Sirrine wrote:I totally agree. I don't know if I can get a 1/2" or larger collet for my Shark HD4, but if I can't, I'll definitely slow the plunge and feed way down. Thanks!

I'll sometimes use forstner bits (but be sure you don't go too deep!) I have a set up to 4", so you can clear a ton of material very fast. When using large bits like that, make sure you clamp the material down to your drill press table first!
