Hi,
I am having another go at an inlay using a V-bit. I downloaded the Hummingbird files and the male and female parts came out fine. The hogging out of the male was the problem however.
At the end of the process, there were some parts that were higher than others and in some areas the overall depth was less than the deepest part of the hummingbird itself, so those parts would not even make contact when glued.
I recalculated the carve a few times afterwards and the results were always the same. I took a few pics unfortunately but they came out blurred.
In the end I created a separate pocket and carved that - will give it try at gluing up and see hot it goes.

Re: V-Inlay Stress!!
The male parts of the v-inlay aren't intended to make contact with the bottom of the female part of the v-inlay, so you might be just fine. Well, maybe not now, if you altered the fit with your own pocket cut.

Re: V-Inlay Stress!!
Michael is right. Some of the male inlay will be short and the male part should not bottom out. Also the backing on the male part will not contact the female part. This allows the clamping force to wedge the male inlay and female pocket together which helps to minimize any gaps.
Remember, clamp, clamp, and clamp some more.

Re: V-Inlay Stress!!
Ok, got it done but I found out what my initial problem was - the bit was not tight enough in the collet, so on the plunge it was moving up in the collet!
Corrected that on another cut and all seems well so far.
Thanks
Steve

Slipping bit can be helped by rubbing the shank on a diamond hone just enough to take the shine off

Could I ask, where did you find the hummingbird files?
