Enter modeling & select the "U" shaped icon for the dome rather than the "n" shaped one. Don't forget you need to add a zero plane if working with dishes,

Sorry, would have given a bit more detail but didn't have the computer with vcarve in front of me when I posted, pretty new to the 3D stuff myself

Try this tutorial if your looking to put stuff in a dish.

Dan if your working with dishes then your z zero should be set to the top of the material from what I have read. I normally work from the material surface anyway so usual set up for me. The zero plane will be inserted by default at that location so just add one & don't worry about where to put it

I made a dish in solidworks. You can make something like a dish by using the cylindrical coordinates r, theta and z. When R ranges from 0 to the radius, theta goes zero to 2 pi and z is the height which can be a function. You can make some cool dishes with nice features and aesthetic geometry like that. Use the golden mean when designing because it is what the Greeks thought was the ideal ratio of work .

I don't feel like I had adequate time for that last post. I think some dish designs could be nice if they have good ratios in them. My brain was on a little vacation a few minutes ago.

Good to hear Dan, I have had to refer to that tutorial a few times placing objects in dishes, if you find like me that things don't appear to be right with the overall heights first thing to check is that the components are in the right order in the component tree

a.s.c. Vcarve does not contain any 3D modelling tools & not everyone has the required software for creating their own models. Vcarve comes complete with a few different Dones/Dishes that can be resized to suit various projects. Maybe not ideal but good enough for a lot of people.

backtracking a tad. what started this whole thing was that Ma bought a couple dozen wooden spoons and I carved santa and a moose on the back. that just prompted the idea of doing the whole spoon so I can do a $50.00 spoon that I can buy for &1.49 fun stuff dan

Very nice Dan. I would not worry about a whole lot of mathematical formulas,, golden mean ratios, etc.

actually I do use the golden ratio but I don't obsess over it. usually if it looks good to my eye it is pretty close to the rule. especially when doing boxes. did that before I knew there was a rule against it. :D fun stuff Dan
