fly cutter

I am thinking of purchasing the grizzly G2861 Fly Cutter to surface my spoil board.This bit with 8 inserts is less than $100
shipped.
Is there a major downside to using this tool that I am missing.
I just hate paying out $250.00 on a standard spoil board cutting bit I will use twice a year.

I looked at the tool you mentioned and I dont think this tool is for surfacing MDF spoilboards. The ones I use are 80mm diameter and have square inserts that cut on the side and the bottom. This looks like a mill tool that cuts metal with the points of the inserts.

I normally buy my bits from the USA but this one worked out better and it is very well built, cost me about A$150 / US$110.

But after looking at the tool you posted, I don't think I'd purchase that tool.
I'm not sure if you have a spindle or a router.
The arbor they sell with that fly cutter is an R8 Collet.
The outside diameter of the shank of the collet is approx. .950".
I have a 3hp Columbo spindle and the largest Collet opening is a 3/4"
You may have to call them and make sure that the R8 will fit in your setup or maybe they have another arbor with a different shank.

We tried a few of the Grizzly router bits and they were terrible out of balance and one lost a flute when we started the router before we even cut anything.

Eagle America no longer carries this "P11-1706" bit (BOTTOM CLEANING 1-1/2 X 5/8 X 1/2SHK) that I've purchased in the past (ok, 2008). Does someone else have a suggestion on a 1.5" to 2" fly cutter with a flat bottom and a 1/2" shank?

If you have a router I hope you dont use a fly cutter as it will fly apart at well under the router speed . They are only good for a couple thousand rpm. At 20,000 you will need a good router bit. I just us a 1 inch carbide bit flat bottom bit from feud bits. If I remember right it was maybe 30 or 40 dollars and I have had it for 4 years now I use it once in a while to surface the table. And other things as well it is as good today as it was when I bought it. Probly will have it ten years from now. I know a router bit is balanced and will not break.

I have a spindle. I wish a fly cutter would last me years. I have to surface my table every ~2 months. The problem I have is that I'll hit a broken screw shank from time to time and it's rough on the bits.

I am SURE I could find at least 1-30 different viable options to do what you want.

I use a 1-1/4 "dishing" router bit made by Freud. I thing it was something like $25 or so.

I flatten the spoil board - and I also flatten panels, before doing other v-carving work.

You will use it more that one a year.
