Clear pocket / Raster / Climb ( True climb question )
Clear pocket / Raster / Climb ( True climb question )
Is there a way to make the - Clear pocket / Raster / Climb - produce a true climb cut instead of the alternating Climb/Conventional? I'm surfacing aluminum and it's producing defects using this Climb/Conventional path. Offset pocketing is not an option with this piece.

hi Todd, this post is quite old but thought i would ask anyway -
Did you ever get a solution to this? I'm looking for the same thing = toolpath for Pocket, Raster that does only climb. Not alternating climb/conv.
The option for Pocket, Offset will do climb only, however the spiralling nature is not great for my softwood projects. I'm looking for climb-only, single direction.

I'm curious what your goal is, Greg.
If it is to have a nice smooth bottom finish for your pockets in softwood, then Raster with the grain using an Up-Cut End Mill set at a 20% Stepover should do the trick.
If you have a different goal you think an "all climb" Toolpath would achieve, please let us know.

If you desire a "true" climb cut and only that, you must select "Offset", not raster. Raster by definition, is back and forth. One direction climb and one conventional. The last (perimeter) path will adhere to the climb/conventional setting

Yeah, he knows the Offset would climb, but complained about the "Spiral action"
I think if we knew what the goal is and/or what problem he needs to solve, we'de be able to be more helpful

Thanks for the feedback guys. Michael you are right , I am looking to improve the bottom finish for pockets in softwood. I had reduced stepover to 30% but I'll try 20% and see how that goes.
cheers, greg

Hi Greg. Don't forget to use an Up Cut End Mill for best results (a Down Cut will typically have more obvious machining marks at the bottom of the pocket)gregrae wrote:Thanks for the feedback guys.
