I keep getting people saying things like:
- what’s half of 1 and 3/16 inches (yuk, yuk, yuk) — easy 1/2” plus 3/32”…next...
- problem with using inches is you need to use fractions rather than decimals — huh?!?
I get my own back by saying: I’m 1880 mm tall; how many decimeters is that? And lo and behold these people seem incapable of providing the answer.
I use “Imperial” / “Metric” depending on what is necessary and there are no pros or cons to sway me one way or another. Nor do I feel the need to enter a 1/4” bit into the database as 6.35mm—let the software do the conversion for you.
Although I must say that the Babylonians had it right: base tweleve is superior to base ten (more factors: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12 rather than 1, 2, 5, 10)….
