Fire up the dragon.

Post by dustybugger »

Having some fun with a multicolored LED strip and first try at pocketing plastic. About 6x6x1/4, used 1/8 and 1/16 endmills at about 9000rpm at 20 ipm. Only problem was getting off the paper on some very old plexiglass. Surprised how well it came out with no finishing.

This was done at .03 deep. Seems to be enough to get a good image.

Thanks for the reply...yes, it does look as if .03 is enough. I had heard that some people just barely scratch the surface and it looks great. I tried one last month, although not illuminated, but think I cut too deep.

Looks awesome. Try warming the protective paper to get it off easy. I usually run a heat gun over it until the paper feels slightly warm to the touch. Some of our smaller pieces of acrylic are over 13 years old, and this always works well.

I used a nice little multicolored base from Decor&After, llc. The units ran about $15.00 with its own power supply, as cheap as I could build them. Also thanks for the tip on the paper removal, I will give that a try.
