Machining parts for radio controlled models

Post by Tony Mac »

Wes Spence (metalworkz on CNCZone) and his son Mike are using DolphinCAD and Cut2D to design and machine radio controlled models and the results off his SIEG SX3 CNC Mill running Mach3 are great!

Wes said - "Cut2D is very easy to use and the 3D toolpath preview provides an in-depth visualization of the machining process and the finished parts before running the machine.”

Many of his projects require multiple toolpaths and a typical example is the front bumper design that requires,

1) Drill 2ea. .114" Dia. mtg holes (Interpolated using .093" dia end mill)
2) Engraving (V bit engraving tool)
3) Mill 2ea. .25"Dia. radiused slots (.25"Dia. Ball nose end mill)
4) Mill the mtg. area to a thickness of .080" (.25" Dia. flat end mill)
5) Mill the outside profile of the part (.125" Dia. End mill)

Below are some photo's of parts Wes has used Cut2D to machine.

New revision of the Battery Plate

Post by metalworkz »

I just cut this new revision of the Battery Plate this weekend using the Cut2d interactive tabs option. The interactive tabs option helps make machining multiple parts from a blank a lot easier and quicker, and it works great! Wanted to post the pictures for anyone curious to take a look.

Some more RC car parts made with Cut2D

Post by metalworkz »

Here is a 1/10th scale RC wheel adapter made with Cut2D. I think it turned out pretty good and the first time I tried. I used 2 different tools and 4 different toolpaths.

They look really great. Do you have any pics of the models they went onto in the end?

Hi,
Thanks for the compliment.
I have a few pictures of partial assembled cars with the parts on them. These are my sons cars and he is the one who designed the parts. He has several kits and other RC parts for sale in his ebay USA auctions if interested. I will post several of these pictures.
Regards,
Wes
