Nesting trays... Cut2D w/3D import

Post by davism5 »

Cut2D Gallery doesn't get enough love :)

A set of nesting trays made with Cut2D, using an imported VectorArt 3D model. I was happily surprised to find you could do this with Cut2D! Really opens a lot of doors if you're willing to fork over a few bucks for a model.

The finger joints weren't done on the router... used a Freud box joint blade in the tablesaw for that.

Hi Dave,

Nice work. I'm really interested in the process you used within CUT2D to generate the carving. I am building a CNC router and currently use CUT2D with a laser engraver/cutter. I thought I would have to use other software to accommodate the CNC router but looks like CUT2D will possibly do the job for me.

THANKS

Daryl - this video specifically looks at the way Cut2D can work with an imported 3D toolpath from either Vector Art 3D Machinist or Cut 3D - http://support.vectric.com/tutorials/V8 ... th_GS.html
Thanks,
James

I apologize for not answering your question... I didn't notice a reply had been posted to the thread. James set you on the right path, though.

The trays were a great hit... gave them to my daughter for Christmas. Warning, though: the ability to carve canned 3D models with Cut2D is a gateway drug. I upgraded to VCarve Desktop within days of finishing up this project.

Hey Dave,
Is there a source or link for the trays pattern?

Well, I'm not Dave ("davis" ) but I'll assume you meant me.

I actually just worked up the pattern from scratch; it's not too complicated, just a matter of getting the dimensions correct for the size of the trays you want to produce and the thickness of the mat'l you're working with. I'll see if I can dig up the files and figure out how to post what I have, though.

I would love to get the file, my daughter would love for me to create a set for her. If you need help of figuring out how to attach the file just ask or you can just email them to joe@joebarrow.com and I will post them for you. btw, you did a great job and they are really nice looking.

Thanks,

Joe

Will try attaching the files...
I wouldn't cut these without reviewing the dimensions; I made some adjustments to how I cut everything along the way and although I *think* these were the latest revisions, my only guarantee that they'll work correctly as posted is that I'll refund every penny you paid for them if not :P

I've been meaning to go back and come up with a cleaner version of the files before I make any more trays, but haven't had a chance yet.

I also had to remove the 3D model from the file for the end of the large tray. That was purchased from VectorArt 3D, and obviously it'd be a violation of the license agreement to redistribute it with the .crv. It's number 58440 on the VA3D web site... only $15.

I don't have files for the sides or bottoms of the trays. Those were just simple rips/crosscuts and a dado to receive the bottom, which I cut on the tablesaw.
