Wooden gear clocks

Post by johnos »

Hello,
Anyone making wooden gear clocks using Cut 2D?
Does any one know of any on-line plans especially for a smaller clock? My router is very small. Maybe I could download plans into my Cad program and simply scale them. I guess as you go smaller the gears maybe harder to make from wood.
Thanks,
John

Try www.woodengears.ca He has a template maker available. It's also a pretty cool site if you like that wood working stuff. :D

I've made one with Cut2D, and it came out quite nicely so far. I'm not quite finished but all the major cuts are done.

Brian Law has a great website and free plans, and he gladly supplies them in DXF format.

Hi, I have just finished my first clock using a home built wooden CNC machine (from a kit), Mach3, Turbocad 8 and Cut2d. The original plans were Gary's clock 2003 which is available free online, I did not like the 'in line' style so I wrapped it around 'Grandfather clock' style.

Cut2d is an amazing program, I used to code all by hand before and could never trust it, but with cut2d I can make a Turbocad file and passing it through cut2d, be out in the garage cutting the part in a few minutes, and no pre testing, I can be sure it will work first time.

Next project is another clock, the aim is to build one that does not require 10Lbs of lead to drive it!

Nice looking clock Nick ! Have you run into any plans for a small clock? My CNC router table is pretty small @ 12" X 12" . Someday soon hope to start on an upgrade and will have a CNC that will be big enough so I won't have to scale my projects down. ;>)

Hi Nick,
That is some mighty fine work there. What kind of accuracy (time) does it have?

The clock is adjustable (by moving the pendulum weight), it usually keeps to within a minute a day.

I have just about finished the next clock, it is the same design but built from 6mm Birch ply instead of the very expensive and difficult to get 4mm Aircraft grade plywood used in the first one. The advantage of using 6mm ply, other than cost, is that I can make the gears 3d giving the clock a lighter feel and more interest (pics to follow).

i would like to cut the wooden gears with a cnc mill. the process seems reasonably straight forward apart from getting a cad design of the gears. Will autocad have a section on gear design to give me a pdf output. I have looked at the suggested gear template generator but cannot figure out how to get a pdf output
Thanks andy

The gear designer on http://woodgears.ca/gear_cutting/template.html outputs a HPGL file which I import into Turbocad (version8!), from there I adjust as required then export as a DXF for use in Cut2D.
If you do not have a CAD program, look on Ebay for a Turbocad, my version is very old but does the job fine and is well worth the investment.

I have just compleated my second clock and hope to sell it as a kit, what do you think? Would people buy it?
Machined from Birch Plywood and supplied with all of the parts (except lead for weights), fittings and some tools.
