Tool path keeps defaulting to climb cut

Post by mplsartist »

I'm trying to cut around the outside of solid parts using a conventional cut but the preview keeps defaulting to climb cut. I've tried restarting Vectric and even starting a new file but I can't seem to get the software to show a conventional cut. I've included a screen shot for reference. What am I doing wrong???

Check that the vectors are properly closed and not just giving the appearance of being closed.

Adrian:
On the drawing side, I have selected the vectors and then clicked on the following:
Join open vectors
Join open vectors with smooth curve
Fit curves to selected vectors (Bezier Curves tolerance 0.01, keep sharp corners, max angle 90 degrees, replace selected vectors)

Is there anything else I should be doing?

Sorry, when I looked at your post earlier it was on my phone and I couldn't see the picture clearly.

The picture shows the toolpath cutting in the correct direction (anti-clockwise) for a conventional cut on the outside of the piece. It would be clockwises if it was on the inside of the piece and vice-versa if it was a climb cut.

So there's nothing wrong. If you want the cut to go in the opposite direction you would need to select a climb not conventional cut.

After I posted, I went back into Vectric and took a closer look at the Icon and realized my mistake. I think I'd been staring at the screen too long or inhaling too much sawdust.

Why do you want conventional cutting vs climb?

Conventional cutting will usually yield a better finish on fibrous materials. This means for sure on plywoods and all but the hardest of woods. Plastics and metal are opposite.

In any case when cutting, simply compare the edges of the part and the waste. If the finish is better on the waste, you cut in the wrong direction.

Gary,

Yes, I get a cleaner cut on wood using a conventional cut, too.

As you said, all one needs to do is compare each side of a cut (waste edge and keeper edge) to decide which is best for a particular material.

Some materials will show different results depending on the chipload. High chipload better with conventional, low chipload with climb. That's why it is important to test feeds, speeds, direction and maybe even different bits when edge quality is important
