new try on strong grain wood ...
After several nice examples on maple, I was curious how would be the look with a darker wood with strong grain. I used now oak and oil based stain. I think that better results could be obtained with darker alcohol based stain which I will try during the week.
Anyway my wife loved the way her face "appears" from behind the grains of this pieces of wood.
Any feedback on which stain is better for sanding on this type of jobs would be appreciated.

hello
great cut.....
my experience with alcohol (spirit) based stain works better on hardwood, mainly on oak... "homogen" woods like beech... the anilin based worked better...
thanks

Hi Gerardo,
I don't have any input on stains but I really like the photo carved in wood. It does have a kind of disguised look. Thanks for posting the picture.

You may be happier using a pore filler with a tint. Depending on the coloring it either highlights or mutes the wood grain, but it allows the surface to be flatter which makes it easier for finishing.

Hi,
I tried out PVC a while ago, but couldn't get results good enough. What type of bit are you using, how deep are you going, and do you have to stain it to actually see the images?
I'd like to give the trial sample pictures a go again, my boss would really like for me to be able to get this to work =P

That's got to be one of the if not the best PhotoVCarve's I've ever seen. Would you mind sharing the settings you used to cut this? What cutters? ETC....
Thanks

Re: new try on strong grain wood ...
Thanks guys for the feedback. Randall, the link gave me very good hints on how to proceed.
About the settings, there are in my other pc and need to confirm, but from what I remember the cutter was a 2mm ball nose, 1.4mm depth, 23k rpm and a feedrate of 30mm/s. The job was done in 105 minutes.

Re: new try on strong grain wood ...
The alcohol stains I have used are on gun stocks, mainly WWII era were a broken handguard piece needed to be matched up to an original piece of wood. All that I have done has been walnut, but the thing I love about alcohol stains are that you can cut the strength with alcohol, which lets you build up to the correct color. They are not like for example min-wax stains were you pretty much get one color. If you try alcohol stains, the one key I will let you know about that everyone seems to have to learn the hard way is that the color when the stain is wet, will be the final finish color after applying the final finish coat of oil, poly, etc. Alcohol drys lighter and people keep adding stain to darken it and when they put the final coat on, it goes way to dark

Hello there
This result is Great.
I do'nt understand that it is done with PhotoVcarve.
Can you give me some information how to fill in the parameters in Photocarve?
I only have experience in carving with V groove machining. as you can see on my website: http://artwork.buroiv.nl/
And this must probably been done by 3D grayscale machining
I like to produce some reliefs from my boat.
I hope to hear
