Bill's second Lithophane with a twist...

Post by BSImages »

I was cutting a lithophane the other day and after finishing the rough cut I broke my 0.031 ball nose bit after just a couple of passes (lower right hand corner of lithophane). Last night it dawned on me that my five dollar 45 degree V-Groove bit might work. (the ball nose cost $40 and is not available locally) So I tried it using the G-Code for .031 bit... and Eureka!!!! It works!!
So because I am too cheap to throw out a 1/2 cut piece of Corian I have discovered that I can cut the lithophane with a 45 degree bit with the settings for a .031 bit, but at a higher speed AND it looks better too. The detail is much finer with the V bit than with the ball nose! I need to find a 20 degree V-bit next...
What do you think?

I am cutting a new Lithophane without the rough cut using the 45 degree V-bit only.
So far it is cutting perfectly...
The text file is nearly 40 MB!
It has far more complicated details.
I will post it tomorrow.

Way cool I will try it next time I have one to make. though your spending way to much on the ball nose MSC sells them for 15.00

Nice work!

Thanks for the tip Bill.

I'll have to give it a shot and crank up those speeds.
I'm designing a new machine that will be dedicated to Lithos only.
I bought the THK rails and ballscrews already...still pricing servos.
Using a strong Vbit will allow for faster cut times...

let us know how you make out.

the process is still pretty slow if there are a lot of plunging. even with my shobpbot at 4ips z and 7.5 ips the speed is slow because of all of the plunging. I tired pausing on a larger one while I went to lunch and I got a nice ridge so gave up. but I will use v bits from now on.

I had the same problem too until I increased the acceleration in Mach II. Now the time estimates are less than a minute off for a job. The acceleration setting tells it how fast to get up to full speed and conversely how fast to slow back down to a stop. After increasing mine though I had to put more braces on the legs my machine table as the whole table would move or jerk with the sudden starts and stops.

Bill,

I've looked at your eagle for quite some time now and it is gorgeous!!!! Would you be willing to share the picture, file, what ever? I want to cut this for a good freind of mine. Before retirement he ran an insurance agency that was called "The soaring eagle agency". It fit this guy to a T. They also have a summer home in northern MN and one of their favorite things is to watch the eagles soaring.

Thanks

You bet!

I would post the G-Code but is very large...(22.8MB)
I particularly like the detail of the dark feathers in the lithophane myself.
Good luck, and please post your results,

Big file transfer tips.

Post by DavidCousins »

On those days that you really need to send a big file, here's a free data transfer service. It'll let you send 2 gigs for free. I use it all the time.
http://www.yousendit.com/

I think the number of downloads and days availability is limited, but that's generally never a problem.

Just login, upload file, provide an email address for the person who needs the file. Then click that you want an email copy.

When the file upload is complete, then just wait for your email. The email will have a link to the download area.

You can share the link with multiple people too.

It is 6.56MB as a ZIP'ed... Mach2/3 ATC (inch)(*.txt) file...
Just load the image in PhotoVCarve use the settings from the attached screen capture, use a V-Bit, and have fun!
