I'm building a 4th axis and hope to cut this soon

Post by DavidCousins »

I modeled this leg using Catia. It's my first "ball and claw" effort. And yes, it needs more work.

I'm planning to cut it on my soon to be built 4th axis machine. (I'm adding a 4th axis to my existing Joe 4x4 Hybrid.) In the past, I've avoided the 4 face machining option because I didn't enjoy moving the material 4 times.

With a 4th axis, I'll be able to precisely spin the material 90 degrees without a problem.

I'm also willing to share the .stl file if anyone's interested. I'd add it here, but it's too big for the forum server. 4 megs. If you want it, send me a PM or email.

Hello Dave,
The ball & claw leg looks great! How far along are you with your 4th axis build? We will be watching to see the part cut with your newly built 4th axis.
Best regards,
Wes

Wes,
My 4th axis build will be pretty fast. I've got all the parts to start construction, however, I'm stuck in Seattle on business for a month, so progress must wait until I return. I've been amusing myself by making that 3D model and by reading forums.

I'm building the same Rotary version that rgoldner designed. He has Joe-4x4-hybrid too. My inspiration to build is through all the great posts in the vectric forums about 4th axis and the wrapping tools. Greolt is one of my favorites when it comes to the 4th axis forum content. He's really done some amazing columns.

There are several guys in the Hybrid forum that are building 4th axis too.

Here's what I'm thinking as an assembly of the legs to the table.
