had tried to change the proportions but lost too much detail so
re expanded the dragon and increased the width of the stand
still balances nicely
the carving is out of cherry
the rough toolpath is with 1/4 straight cutting bit
the finish toolpath is with 1/8 round nose
sanded using a 320 grit 6" mop sander
stain with minwax cherry
no finish at this point
overall length is 14 inches

Rick,
Very nice work...first photo looks like an optical illusion???
Does the stand just balance on it's edge?

yes it does
it is a cantilever effect like the wine bottle rack posted elsewhere
the reference to "Zen" in the title is because of the balance
demonstrated
the attatched is an earlier model

Nice work! How well does the sanding mop work on a detailed carving like that?

Gene;
It works great
use 120 grit to do the first sanding
then use 320 for final sanding
with the cherry the 320 will glaze the wood so that
there is less uptake of stain which is ok because it
gives shading to the carving where there are ripples
in the body of the dragon

Gene,
Might need to look you up. We own a place down by Lands End. Get down there several times a year, escpecially for the fishing. Hear the Dorado bite is pretty good right now. Nice Wahoo in the photo if my eyes are correct. Tough for me to see that small of a photo.
