First 3D job on Digirout1000

Post by dpowli »

This is one of two curved bar rail corner moldings we did for a customer.
Designed in some modeling software, took to Cut3D and then VCP.
Material is maple. Took about 2.5 hours total for each.

Nice job!!!!

Was that just router time or total time for glue up and finish sanding etc.?

What did you charge for those?

Thanks,
Nick

Wow that's nice work. Maple generally is a pain to machine very hard and soft maple tears out a lot. What kind of tooling did you use? Speed rpms/IPM? What kind of spindle do you have? Wish you took a video. Did you machine the rabbets on the backsides first?

Thanks for comments. The 2.5 hours was machine time only. Add about 1.5 hr for glue up, sanding and shaper. Sanding was surprisingly little. Price was $250 each - hard maple. Used American carbide .5" endmill for rough and American Carbide .5" ballnose for finish - both bits 4" long. Machined top side first, then rabbets on bottom. Bottom roundover done on shaper. "Spindle" is 3.5hp PC router at 19K rpm. IPM set at 100 ips with a Z max set at 50 IPM

Awesome. Did you have to make a jig to pass it on the shaper to hold it upright?

Yes, screwed 1/2" thick piece to inside bottom rabbet before taking to shaper.
