3D milling aluminium - RC helicopter tail rotor hub.

Post by tahustvedt »

I milled this part out of 6082-T6 aluminium today. I used a 4 mm ball end mill for the roughing passes and a 2 mm ball end mill for the finishing pass with a 0.075 mm stepover. The finishing pass took ~25 minutes for each side. It was effortless for the machine so I could just leave it alone and do something else. I was a little worried that I would break tools or somethign since Cut3D doesn't support ramping (that I know of) but it wasn't a problem with ball end mills.

You can actually see the 3D geometry and the faces in the surface of the aluminium. :)

I drilled and tapped the bolt holes afterwards.

It works. :) Here I'm testing the tail rotor for vibrations.
