Turned Box
I turned a little round box, but wanted to do something different with the lid.

Re: Turned Box
Looks very nice! What size are we talking here and what bits did you use? I did something like that a few years back with a 1/16" tapered and it scared me half to death...

Re: Turned Box
Thanks Mike. It's about 3" dia and 2 high. Used an 1/8 end mill to rough the top and finished with a 1/16 ball mill. Do not remember the RPM, but was feeding about 40imp.mikeacg wrote:Looks very nice! What size are we talking here and what bits did you use? Re: Turned Box
Now that I have been doing this for a few years I guess I am less afraid of it but those expensive 1/16" tapered bits are a little daunting. I'm not sure I would ever carve anything that small with enough depth to actually utilize all that cutting edge either. But I have 2 of them 'just in case'! Thanks for sharing!

Re: Turned Box
i've been turning 1.375 pocket watches with a 1.00 carving in them using a .032/,1/32 bit. haven't broken one yet but it is scary to watch. Touching off at the top of the material is iffy. i just use a piece of paper to gauge the surface. i'm running at 20 inches min. i'm going to drop down to a .750 dia carving for ladies pendent watches and see how that goes. Dan up in northern Maine.
Re: Turned Box
maineshops, could you post a photo of one of your watches? What depth do you carve.
