2 Sided Project

Post by Tony Mac »

Jon Watson at Watson Studios has been using Cut3D to machine double sided parts on
his home built CNC machine.

This part (a Pulse Rifle from the movie Aliens) was designed in 3dStudio Max 9 & exported
out as an .stl file. It's at about 40% size because that's how big the sample piece of Sign Foam
was. He used a 1/4" end mill for roughing and 1/8" ballnose for finishing pass with 10%
stepover, and it took a little over an hour to machine.

To accurately align the material for this 2 sided project Jon machined a 90 degree fixture that
appears to work well. He's posted a time-lapsed video on youtube that shows machine roughing
and finishing both sides of the model.

Jon has also sent us a higher resolution video (21Mb) and if you would like to download this
please PM me and I'll send you the link.

Thanks Jon for taking the time to video this project so others can see how it all works.
Your machine runs very well and it would be nice if the technology could run as fast as the video :D

More details about Jon's machne build are available on CNCZone,
