Rcnewcomb said to post projects because it encourages other so here's one we did today (after I adjusted my display, thanks again Rcnewcomb).
It's off the machine and only has one sealer coat of lacquer on it so far.
The birch carved so smoothly that it took just a minute or two of light sanding with some 400 grit.
Not yet sure how this will finish out - it's going to be one of the prizes for a drawing and I've got some choices.
After glazing to bring out the detail we'll either do a stained round-over edge with a hanger, inlay a brass edge with a hanger or cut an 11º bottom and mount it to a chunk of... something - walnut maybe or a dark rust colored Corian. I'll be meeting with the drawing person tomorrow and get her input.
Cut from 10x10x.75 birch.

Re: Birch is Da Bomb...
That would be nice if every thing carved that smooth. Can you share the specs on the bit, speed and feeds please.
Thank You
Frank

Very nice! I don't think I've ever used birch but I like the way it looks! Guess I'd better go check the woodshed. I know there some out there...
Thanks for sharing!

Glazing is already part of the plan. After glazing to bring out the detail we'll either do a stained round-over edge with a hanger...
I've read Tim's article on glazing and it's very good - pretty much what I have been doing for about 30 yrs in the furniture business - brands and all. Hoping to get that part taken care of this afternoon but I still have to decide on an edge treatment.
Sure - Roughing - .25" 4 flute end mill, Pass/Step 0.1 40%, 12000 rpm at 50 imp. (I slowed the feed from 60)vfauto wrote:That would be nice if every thing carved that smooth. Can you share the specs on the bit, speed and feeds please.
Finish - .125" 4 flute tapered ball nose, Stepover 0.01 8%, 12000 rpm at 75
mike and tony - if you've got some birch, give it a try. I don't think you'll be disappointed. We were lucky enough to find about 60 bf of 11-14" wide planks that were kiln dried and skip planed to 1.125" for an unheard of price of $1.87/bf and every bit of it has some gorgeous ribbon grain and color that runs through it. It's also been very stable in the shop and has cut beautifully for everything we've tried. The smaller lumber (6" - 9") isn't figured as heavily and is closer to maple in appearance though it tends to amber a bit under lacquer, unlike maple.

Re: Birch is Da Bomb...
The glazing is subtle and nicely executed. Simple is good.
