Dasch,

what do you think about the relief kind of modeling like this and this; do you assume 'em to be fairly easy to do in SILO?

Hey Paco,
I think that those shapes will be a LOT easier - especially things like the feathered eagle; once Silo2 is out (It's not available for a mac yet - which is what I use). Silo2 will have displacement painting which is very good for that. I'm not sure how well it will export yet though. There is a lot of poly modelling in the Eagle for example. I would find it easier to carve by hand like this one (which I carved in polystyrene foam, from a drawing provided by the client):

Dasch:
Welcome. What part of Vancouver Island are you from?
I have tried Rhino, but don't find it very easy to learn. Had a quick look at Silo, looks like it might work a little easier. What types of things do you design? Have you designed anything in Silo then cut it in Cut3D?
Thanks.
Rusty

Hi Rusty:
I'm in Nanaimo.

I haven't tried Rhino, but Silo is one of the easier ones to learn in my opinion.
I design a very wide range of things, but am primarily an Illustrator. I also have a history in Scenic Painting and prop design and construction for local theatre.

The Marlin model, and Rooster model that come as samples with Cut 3D were both created in Silo. I don't run a cnc machine myself so am woefully lacking in the cutting area.

A link to my 3D gallery:

and some images of digitally modelled 3D sculptures (These were built in Wings3D, a fine and FREE polygon modelling app):

This one was for a display company in New York. I designed it, did the digital modelling, finish carving, and paint:

The next two were built from someone else's drawings and were painted by others. I just did the digital sculpting. They are in a waterpark in Australia:

Hi Gene:
Sorry I've been so long in replying. We've been a little snowed in here this last week.
Yes, I found Silo easy to learn but I had already 2 or 3 years of experience with polygon modelling just in other apps.
If you peruse the Silo Forums you can find a lot of links to online tutorials and examples as well as folks willing to give advice and answer questions.
I've learned mostly by plugging away at it day and night, but 3D modelling isn't a magic pill. Great artists make it look easy, and the media makes it look immediate.
I was inspired early on by tutorials by Glenn Southern who is a fine digital3D artist as well as a superb sculptor. A good mind for sculpturing or modelling in the real world in three dimensions is definitely an asset.

How is the silo program working. I have looked at another called 4dblue but I do not know enough about 3d modeling to say how good they are.
