Cut 3D Preview with Radiused End Mill

Post by saundby »

I got a set of nice radiused end mills recently, but when I use them with Cut3D the preview of the finish looks like a mess. Are there any tips to correcting this?

Here's the tool for the attached preview from the database:

Here's the messy-looking preview when using that tool with a 4.7% stepover (I've tried various stepovers with the same results):

When I use an 0.625 rounded end bit, it looks like this:

Have I set something up wrong?

Try increasing the simulation quality under Toolpaths - Preview Simulation Quality

You have the step over too high drop it down to 10% or less.

Thanks for the responses, however:

FixitMike: I don't see any such setting. I've dug around a lot, but I don't see it. There's no Toolpaths menu item, and I don't see it on the preview or toolpaths windows/tabs.

highpockets: I have taken it down to 4.7% with no change.

You are absolutely right. I assumed that because Vectric products are similar, there would be a "Toolpaths" option in Cut3D on the menu bar along with "File View Help" like there is in VCarve and Aspire.

Thanks. I've gone back and forth through it, I guess it's just not there. I guess I'll drop an email to support and see what they say.

The tool in the first photo is listed as an the engraving bit, not a ballnose. Dont know if that would have anything to do with it

You have it as an end mill but it should in the engraving bit category designating the angle and the type of tip and size.

How did you create a Radius Engraving bit in Cut3D? It only supports End Mills and Ball Noses. The tool database screen shot you've got isn't possible in Cut3D as far as I can see.

Adrian,

Tool types in Cut3D 1.110 are: Ball Nose, End Mill, Radiused End Mill, and Radiused Engraving.

Try using the "Radiused End Mill" (REM) tool type instead of "Radiused Engraving" (RE). Does the picture of the REM look more like your actual bit than does the picture for the RE?

Odd, the trial version is 1.025. I would have thought the trial would be the latest version but it obviously isn't.
