Having trouble with machine time estimate

Post by jonnyk2 »

First off hello everyone, I am very excited to get started in the CNC world. I am a big newb so please feel free to mock and throw rotten fruit.

I am working on creating a foam model of a scan of a 12 inch sculpture and some scans of a live human model. I am attaching my whole work flow even though some of it is outside of the vectric product, just in case that is where I am messing up.

1. I scan the model and clean it up with some editing software. I then bring it into zbrush and use its decimation feature to reduce the total number of vertices and faces. (i think the faces is the problem).
Capture.PNG
2. I am able to reduce the model to vertices: 5810 triangles 11616

3. I export this model into cut3d and have the following settings;
Capture3.PNG
4. In this image i am trying to do a 4 sided machining process. still end up with the same tool path issue even if i just do 2 sided.
Capture4.PNG
5. I choose a roughing toolpath and end mill and use the default settings, then I get the big fat mess.
Capture6.PNG
So I am assuming that my model size/faces/triangles are still way to many but I seem to find people tooling models with about 30k triangles. I can decimate the model more but of course I just lose detail, which is not a huge problem because this is just being used as a armature for clay to put on then bronzed. I will also chop off the legs and mill them separately but haven't messed with those yet until I figure out where I am messing up.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Could the "mess" you are getting be attributed to your model being close to 13 *feet* thick (according to the image in step 3)?

I am working on creating a foam model
How big do you want your finished project to be?

The parameters in your screen shot shows
X: 44.2292"
Y: 55.0"
Z: 44.3403

So that is a cube of material 3.5ft X 4.5ft X 3.5ft
I don't believe the Shopbot Buddy has that large of a work area, so you will have to use slicing.

I still don't get where the machine time estimate is coming into the question???

In the last screenshot, you can see an estimated time over 70 hours.

As Randall noticed, without confirmation of the actual size of the job, one cannot have a clear idea of the problem.
Best regards

The machine time makes sense for carving a 44x55x44 block of material with a 1/2" bit and a 0.4" pass depth with a 120 ipm feed rate

((X/bit_diameter) * Y * (Z/pass_depth))/feed_rate

((44/0.5) * 55 * (44/0.4))/120 = 4,437 minutes = ~74 hours

Yes, I did notice that.
I also notices Randall's size estimate of 44x55x44.
I have not seen a shopbot with more than 6" Z height so I still don't see why the OP is asking about time guesstimate when his dimensions are incomprehensible.
He would have to do a helluvalot of slicing to make a model that size.
I also notice he hasn't come back since 19 March 2015, so why are we even addressing his problem?
Cheers
