Assistance / opinion for handrail section !

Post by robert_woodguy »

Hi guys,

Almost newbie here, haven’t post much,..... but with this upcoming question, I’m…really lost and hopping some ...rescue
Was ask by a local stair specialty woodshop to commission / reproduce a little series of a hand railing section (See below pic)

Essentially, it’s 1½ in diameter with a 45° angle….with also a ¾’’ width flat bottom section ! made out of laminated 8/4 maple !

Obviously ( to me), this is called for a “flip” or say…. turn upside down technique with location pin and machined with a ballnose multy pass…at least I assume !!
This is where I’m hoping someone to steer me in, let say…. at an easier approach...if possible !!
Thks in advance, Robert

You're right.
Since you can't do undercuts, set up pin guides on centerline and flip design around them.

What I have done using VCarve Pro.

Cut the outline of the curved rail using a 1/4" bit, cutting 3/8" deep.
Bandsaw just outside the outline.
Cut to the outline using a flush bit on a router table.
Cut the 4 corners with a 3/4" roundover bit on a router table.

Not much CNC work, but I suspect you can do it faster this way. Of course one would cut practice pieces before doing the real parts.
Good judgement comes from experience.
Experience comes from bad judgement.

Robert,

Do you have Aspire ?

I usually make mine in two halves, then glue and dowel them together, it also saves having to stock material over 2" thick.

If you only have a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

Humm....Two thing here !!

1st....Can someone either advise a moderator or tell me how to advise the right persons.....for :
Only when I to this reply form that I see Paul A reply, meaning, if I simply look at the thread, his reply does NOT SHOW, either at the bottom and /or no indication of a 2nd page ??!! strange hen :?

Now...back to this question / treat I started.
Thanks FixitMike... and Paul A !
This is some "eye" opener on alternatives methods......I just enjoy reading about, was looking for !
Although these are interesting.....I still see it just may be best & simpler and better outcome ( from Aspire) to go with the flip with dowels method !
I'll give it a test in the next few days and come back with some pics to show !
Later guys ;)
