Generating a 3d printable file with Cut3D

Post by cnewb »

I can't tell from CUt3D demo if it is possible to generate a 3D printable STL file.

I would like to import old 2d dxf files, add height data and print, rather than CNC routing.

These are very simple, flat form objects, usually 1/8" to 1/2" ( thick ) plastic materials.

Not complex modeled shapes.

Yes, I know ASPIRE is a wonderful tool but I don't need $2k worth of features.

Cut3D has no modeling capabilities so would be no help with what you describe. Aspire is overkill as your not looking to drive a CNC so you'd be better off looking around for a basic 3D CAD package which can output an STL. There are probably some free programs which you could use to do this - Sketchup may work, TinkerCAD or even the trial version of Rhino depending how many parts you need to make.

Thanks,
James

Sketchup would work for this as you could import the flat vectors, create faces and pull the parts to whatever height required and then use one of the free STL plugins to export it.
