Best Cad package for Cut3d

Post by jbbjshlws »

Hello!
New to the forum, I wanted to put out my feelers and see what everyone else is using to create their STL files?
Cheers,
Joshua

I am trying out Silo - seems to be workable at a low cost.

Hexagon is used by Jamie Oxenham.

Rhino - Aspire - are a couple of options

Solidworks does it too - but not for the artsy world.

Thanks for the great replies, I also have Aspire but from what I can see it would be near impossible (I'm still going through the tutorials) to create a 3d shape that would need machining from multiple sides, it looks great to pop an stl file into it from another program but I cannot for the life of me work out how to create a full 3d shape. What I am looking to create would basically be a hollow cylinder that morphs into a hollow semicircle, I would think extruding along a path similar to this http://i.ytimg.com/vi/gCmz5FrL3XI/0.jpg. So to do this you would need to machine it from top and bottom. Do you know of any tutorials that would let me do this from Aspire? or am I better off learning Blender or Hexagon 2.5 etc?

Fairly easy to make in Aspire. Pictured is the concave side. You'll need to enlarge the model slightly for wall thickness and mill from the other side to get one half of the complete model. Make two and glue at the edges. You'll also need to add registration holes to accurately flip the model.

FULL - 3D ???

Mee too - Aspire is a GREAT application but the 3D in Aspire seems to have it's strength in "relief" 3D - not in FULL 3D

Yes of course it is 3D. For that matter even Cut 2D is really in 3D. A piece of construction grade 2x4 is also 3D

BUT - to do a 4-th axis REAL - FULL 3D - I don't see Aspire there.

Are there workarounds - yeah, for the most part.

To take a 2D and wrap it around a cylinder and "emulate" the "A" or "C" axis - yes Aspire CAN do that.

To import a FULL 3D model into Aspire and keep the full 3D model in it's entirety, then get Aspire to do a FULL REAL 3 dimensional program - I don't think so.

If there IS a way I would like to know that process.

So just to check with you again, if the goal is to make a single item that is machined on multiple sides with Cut3d. This cannot be done with Aspire?

Would I be better off using sketchup?
