angled pocket cut

Post by eph210 »

Hello all
I'm trying to cut a large pocket with a slope to the bottom. On the rough out passes it cuts a stepped pocket followed by a nice clean up profile pass. But the finishing pass I get a great bottom but little scallops on the edges that I am going to have to sand out. I cannot see a way of doing that nice smooth profile pass on the finish path. Is there a machining strategy that would let me get the bottom and the edges/sides smooth? I greatly appreciate all the help on this forum.
Thanks
Euan

Have you tried the Offset option with the climb or conventional cut direction?

Yes, it would appear that I must prop the workpiece up to get the desired angles and use vcarve pro for the pocketting. Thank you.

Are you using C-Carve or Cut 3D? If you are using V-Carve you can probably achieve what you want with the fluting tool path. There are some posts on using fluting for angled pockets and other things. Search for Fluting. Basically you use the fluting tool to create the ramp by creating lines that are close together and "fluting" each line with an end mill.

Thanks for the idea. I think what I can do is import the cut3d toolpath into vcarve pro and then write flute vectors to clean up the edges. Doing the entire sloped pocket using flutes would involve too much math for me, I think. It is sloped in both directions. The values at the edges though are part of the design and so are available. This is great, Thanks again.
