Not milling a square, but oval
Not milling a square, but oval
Hello all ,
I am having a small issue with cut3D. I bought several "dish"shaped files from vectorart3D , and when I route it , only the oval form is shaped ( and includig the object offcourse) , all is fine.
The outer parts ( when I import it in vcarve pro) , is a square, only the dish and object in the dish is routed.
All perfectly fine. But I also made some of my own:
The issue is , that the whole square ( red part) is routed as well , although Z=0 , nothing to be milled , the router goes through the whole square, which takes quite a lot of time.
This I tried as well , but still the same:
The Dish shaped images I bought from vectorart are only routed inside the dish , outside the dish , the router doesn't come.
I hope I made myself clear.
Now , the question; how do I change that only what is below Z=0 is routed , only the dish shaped ( and objects in there) are routed.
I didn't find any optiona in cut3D , so I guess It has something to do with the CAD programm , I use Rhinoceros.
Any help is appreciated,
Cor

Re: Not milling a square, but oval
The boundary vector option is only available in Aspire you can't do it in Cut3D.
The Vector Art models come with with a preset boundary as part of the model which is why they cut they way they do.
I haven't used Cut3D in anger for years as I use Aspire but I'm pretty sure you can't do what you want with your own models.

@ Adrian , thanks for the heads up..... no need to look further than.
Pretty crap that you can only cut out something square in cut3D

Re: Not milling a square, but oval
I haven't got a suitable file to try it with but trying setting the Model Silhouette option on the 2nd page of settings. It works for a raised model but I'm not sure if it will work for sunken one or not.

@ Adrian ,
Thanks for looking into this.
I tried the silhoette option , it did look very promising , but now it cuts out the oval as well:
attached I have a file with the dish ( dish only2.stl)
*edit* , the stl file was not allowed , so I changed it in dxf

I am sure that the first tutorial for Cut 3d shows the use of a boundary as I am thinking of using this for some things and wanted to see what it could do. Just saw it tonight 2/5/2015

It's the Silhouette option that I refer to a couple of posts earlier.

Use silhouette option as shown, do NOT check the box for adding a cut out toolpath.
I've learned my lesson well. You can't please everyone,so you have to please yourself

When setting up the file in Cut3d, on page 2 Material Size and Margins, Section 2 Machining Margins around Model, you need to check Symmetrical, enter 0.001 in the box, and check Use Model Silhouette. This will restrict the tool path to cutting .001 inside the edge of the model and prevent it from cutting the dish out of the material.
