Our first attempt with grape carving was less than stunning. Lots of "fuzzies" and the edge pieces broke while carving the cutout. This was carved in mahogany.
This was done with a 1/4" end mill for the roughing pass and an 1/8" ballnose with a 10% stepover for the finish pass -- one hour and 40 minutes of machine time (ouch!)

This is better
This is a slightly different pattern. We used a 1/8" end mill for the rough and a 1/8" ball nose with a 10% stepover for the finish pass: about 40 minutes of total machine time. It still required some hand work but overall was much better. This was carved in hard maple. We are looking forward to seeing how it looks with glazing.
