Zebra wood tribal mask

Post by Xxray »

First time cutting with zebra wood, I have stayed clear due to the expense.
Found a 5ft chunk too good to pass up ... Only 5" wide, but thats perfect for this mask design.
Its about 12x4". .80 thick.
Did a rough pass with a .25 endmill, then a finish with a .9 ballnose. Didn't do a complete cutout, as lately I like leaving the objects in the wood block ,,, But I did cut the outline down to about .70. That not only cleans up the rough cutting outline, but emphasizes its 3D character as well. Used 2 coats of spray on gloss clear coat, put a hanger on it, and thats it.
Total time from block of wood to this was about 2 hours.

Looks really nice! Seeing that mask made out of zebra wood really brings it to life.

Indeed.
One must chose their subject well with wood like this, with some models, the wild grain patterns would be too distracting
