Cedar USMC

Postby Xxray » Sat Sep 17, 2011 11:44 pm

I know alot of folks shy away from using cedar in 3D projects, I have taken a liking to it.
Fairly cheap, easily available, and some pretty impressive coloring and grain patterns. This one is 10 inches across, took about 3 hours to machine with a .9 tapered bit.
I left this one in the block instead of cutting it out, to emphasize contrast & grain. A little finish sanding, 2 gloss clear coats, and its good to go.

Nice Job! I especially like the white stripe through the eagles head. What is your source for the .9 tapered bit?

Great job! The pronounced cedar grain really compliments the carving.

Thanks guys, the white stripe is indeed nice. I set it up to run across like that, but of course had no real idea exactly where it would turn up.
I get these bits at a local machine shop which makes them. Pretty sure they do mail order, and they sell a bit on ebay too, real nice guys there. I went a few weeks ago and bought 4 bits, and he gave me 2 nice bits as samples. Here is their contact info
